FAFSA Online : Did You Mean To Say...?

University of Phoenix - Thinking Ahead

The world of student loans is quite complicated. There are a variety of terms and words thrown around, which many find confusing. One of these is the acronym "FAFSA". It stands for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

Let's take a closer look at each one of these. Yes, "application" is one of them, which you may not be thrilled to discuss, particularly if you are a high school senior and either just finished, or are in the process of finishing your college applications. (Wait, you haven't started? What are you twiddling your thumbs for?!?! Get cracking! Harvard is waiting!)

The word "student" is key because it defines your present situation. "Federal" is synonymous with government. And you must be thrilled to pieces to see "free", as you'll find that the number of times you see that word in college is extremely rare.

"Aid" is the one that should really be your focus. Because college is so expensive, you will need all of the financial help you can muster up. Sure, mom and dad will do their best, but nine times out of ten their resources won't be enough. Therefore, the FAFSA will allow you (and them) to see what type of "aid" the federal government can provide, either by way of loans, scholarships, or grants.

Maybe you happen to be a grandson of Warren Buffett or the new adoptee of Bradgelina and don't need the help. Despite arousing jealously from your peers (and us), you may have a special skill or talent that the federal government has money for. What do you have to lose? It's free!

So, put down that magazine and get out of that chat room – you've got a FAFSA to apply for!
